Baja pics, discussions   Leave a comment

I’ve had a Facebook page running longer than this blog, and there is some good content and picture albums on it, mostly relating to sea kayaking in Baja. Here’s the link http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/PaddlePublishingcom/314115002855

Facebook has just stated that they intend to close down their “discussions” app by Oct. 31, so I’ll be transferring those posts and replies over to this page by then. Paddle on comrads!

New Dolphin Species Found   Leave a comment

It was heartening to read about a new species of dolphin found off the coast of Australia. There have only been 3 new species of dolphin found since 1800. For whatever reason, the news feels like having a newborn come into your life, to give a glimmer of hope for the future, to say yes, the planet is lovely and okay. Of course it is not, but the feeling is positive, though probably short lived. Here is the article   http://lightyears.blogs.cnn.com/2011/09/16/new-species-of-dolphin-discovered-off-australia/?hpt=hp_c2

whitewater video   Leave a comment

I’ve posted a whitwater video I made last year on Vimeo. Go to  www.vimeo.com/28161007/  or enter “Road Trip 2010 A Kayaking Odyssey.” It’s a fun 20 minutes and shows the other (besides touring) side of my paddling career. It’s got some great boaters in it, as well as some regular folks like me. It’s my second attemp at video, but it was fun and I hope to do more.

To start the late summer/fall paddling season, a couple of fresh water tours in my homestate of Colorado are planned. One of them will be Morrow Point Reservoir on the Gunnison River. It is 12 miles long and courses through the upper Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The canyon walls are steep and beautiful, though not the soaring faces just downstream in Black Canyon Natl. Park. There are some good overnight spots, kokanee salmon to be caught, and a few interesting day hikes. There are no public motorized craft allowed in the reservoir, so it is very touring kayak-friendly. I hope to shoot some video and stills and post them later. Anybody in the area and interested in joining is welcome. I hope to go in late August or mid-Sept. PS There is a carry down to the lake. It is 250 steps long. After that there is 1/2 mile of moving water before hitting the lake. The carry back up to the cars will be an issue, but with 2 folks per boat, some kayak wheels and backpacks, I think it will go fairly smoothly.
